CSpring Introduces Coding To DREAM Alive Scholars In Grades 6-8

Blog

DREAM Alive is a local Indianapolis nonprofit organization dedicated to developing youth in at-risk communities to become leaders. They partner with schools, communities, and corporations to provide their scholars career experiences, character development, and relational mentoring. Through a carefully constructed six-year program that targets seventh graders, DREAM Alive produces young people ready to serve their community with a clear career path after high school.

By providing at-risk youth with three key opportunities over six years—strong mentoring relationships, long-term character development, and multiple experiential learnings—we will develop young men and women of integrity and character who are confident, skilled, and willing to serve their community”

– Eric Müller, Executive Director – DREAM Alive

To execute on their mission, Eric and the DREAM Alive team organize career field trips to local businesses. They were looking for a technology partner to give their scholars exposure to careers in coding. For Michael, the partnership was a no-brainer. DREAM Alive is committed to growing servant leaders and at CSpring, we are servant leaders – added bonus – we’re also a team of technology experts. A perfectly aligned opportunity for mentorship.

Under Michael’s direction, the CSpring team transformed our conference room tables into football fields where the scholars would soon write scratch code to move a robot to the end zone.  When the scholars arrived – it was game time – literally!

Scholars took turns programming and cheering one another on.  In each quarter of the game, a new obstacle was added to the field raising the stakes and challenging the students’ problem-solving skills.  As the “fans” and instructors, the CSpring team had a chance to mingle with the scholars and talk with them about their career aspirations and opportunities in technology.

“It was amazing to see how quickly the scholars picked up coding! They were so persistent – and that skill alone will take them far in life. Keep up the great work, DREAM Alive – I think I saw some future CSpring employees today!”

Emma Myers, Director Marketing & Talent Acquisition – CSpring

In 2017, all of the seniors participating in the DREAM Alive program graduated from high school and 93% went on to college after completing the 6 years of programming. To learn more about DREAM Alive and how you can help, visit their website https://www.dreamaliveinc.org/
